There is no need to purchase a cold brewing system to cold brew coffee. All you need is a french press and at least 12 hours brewing time!
Cold brewed coffees have a loyal following, especially from those who love coffee, but have gastric reflux or heartburn. Cold brewed coffee has less acid and offers a smoother cup of coffee.
Using a coarse ground coffee (any roast you like) stick to the ratio of 1 cup of coffee to 2 cups cold water. For our 8 cup french press you can safely use 3 cups of coffee to 6 cups of cold water. Use freshly roasted coffee when you can for better flavor. (Remember, we are making a concentrated coffee "base" to be diluted with water or milk.)
Directions:
Remove the plunger and pour 3 cups of coarse ground coffee into the french press. Add 6 cups of cold water to the press and stir at least two times to make sure that all coffee is wet. The grinds will slowly fall to the bottom.
Cover the press with plastic wrap and allow the coffee to brew for at least 12 hours in the refrigerator.
Once the coffee has brewed for at least 12 hours, place the plunger into the press and press downward slowly to filter out the coffee grounds. Pour the concentrate into an air-tight container. See tip below if it is murky.
To make coffee consider a 1:3 ratio of coffee concentrate to water or milk. Place about one part concentrate to three parts hot or cold water or milk. Serve cold, hot, iced or at room temperature. Enjoy the smoothness (less bitterness and very low acid) that comes from cold brewed coffee only.
Tip: If your cold brewed coffee concentrate is murky or dirty looking, simply filter the concentrate through a standard coffee filter. It will clear the concentrate!
