Steinbach Nutcrackers

The History of Steinbach Nutcrackers - In a Nutshell

The history of Steinbach nutcrackers starts with the industrious and highly adaptable Steinbach family being relocated several times due to war. The Steinbach family was originally from Austria. They were a family of educated professionals such as builders, architects, politicians and clothiers, who through the rigors of war, landed in a boom town in Germany. They mined there for silver, tin and other metals until the ores were depleted. At that time they were forced, yet again, to adapt.

This adaptation came in the form of wood carving. Many miners were excellent wood carvers; it was from necessity that many miners had to form the handles of their own tools and carve entire tools by hand. The Steinbachs started the business by purchasing a wood mill and timber yard. The mountainous region may have been depleted of its ore, but not its timber. Over time, the Steinbachs began making their world-famous nutcrackers, ornaments and other wood products.

Over two centuries and seven generations of Steinbachs have made these precious hand-carved wood nutcracker masterpieces from German timber. The company received a big boost under the leadership of Herr Steinbach, who limited the number of nutcrackers made to create demand, promoted and signed the nutcrackers, broadened the line from public official nutcrackers to heroes, characters from literature and characters from folklore from cultures across the globe and insisted on the highest quality.

Herr Steinbach died in 2007. At that time his daughter, Karla, owns and operates the Steinbach company and its legacy. She is the lead designer and and her eldest daughter Karolin in now the general manager of the Steinbach company. Both ladies are just as active as their father and grandfather. They faithfully attend nutcracker signings and continue to push the quality of their nutcrackers skyward. The Steinbach nutcracker company has two factories, one in Hohenhamein, Germany and the other is located where this story starts after war pushed the Steinbachs into mining, Marienburg, Germany.
